Preparing for a Sound Mix at Matlin Recording

Without a doubt, one of the most enjoyable parts of completing any project is the sound design and mix. The most important part of the process is to be confident in the people you are working with. At Matlin Recording we take great pride in offering our clients the hightest technical skills along with a unique style of creativeness.

Picture Lock - The picture should be in fine cut, locked form. Any additional changes to the final image will add time and cost to the post production process.
Film to Tape Transfers - If the final cut is from a film workprint or answer print, the workprint must be telecine transfered to videotape. This must be a true telecine transfer that incorporates the NTSC 3:2 pulldown.
OMF - Using Digidesigns OMF utility, you can cut on an Avid (or other non linear systems) and convert all media to a format that can be delivered to the sound design session. click here for more information on these processes.
Videotape Time Code - Time Code on the videotape should be 29.97 ndf or 29.97 df. For more information on time code... click here.
Academy Leader - If the intension is to make a film print, then the videotape must have proper Academy Countdown Leader. The 2 mark should appear exactly 2 seconds prior to first image. A corresponding beep (one frame in duration) should be on each and every sound track.
Cue Sheets - Cue sheets are not necessary but can be helpful if the sound design was not performed by us. Idealy the sheets should show time code relationships. If this is not possible, then the sheets should reflect 35mm footage counts.
Audio Media - If bringing media to us for a sound mix, please contact us at 212-206-0350 to help you bring the audio in the proper formats
Mag Tracks - All audio on 16mm or 35mm magnetic tracks should be transfered to a time coded DAT. The proper pull down, -.1% speed change must take place at the time of this transfer. The DAT should contain 29.97 time code.
Edit Lists (EDLS) - Edit lists should be on Macintosh or PC formatted disks and the list should be in a CMX 3600 format. Leaving in video edits is OK.
Music - Music can be delivered on either DAT, CD's, DA88's, computer files (SDII or AIFF format) or audio cassette.
